World Series 2016 Weve never seen a Game
CLEVELAND Folks, this is special. We have never seen a Game 7 with this much historical significance. Never ever, in the long, storied history of the great sport of baseball. The Cubs, as you know, havent won a World Series since 1908. Cleveland, the host team, hasnt won since 1948, so were looking at championship-le s droughts of 108 years and 68 years. One franchise and one city is going to be really happy, Cleveland manager Terry Francona said way back before this World Series started. The other one is going to probably all the same things you've heard year after year, you'll probably hear it again. I hope it's them.MORE: Baseball's longest World Series droughtsThis is the 38th World Series John Smoltz Jersey winner-take-all Game 7 in baseball history, but none of those first 37 even comes close, from the dual-drought perspective.Sure, weve seen individual teams snap lengthy droughts. When the Red Sox won the 2004 World Series, they ended a skid of 86 years without a title, and when the White Sox won in 2005, they snapped an 88-year drought. Ender Inciarte Jersey But both of those Sox squads won their titles in four games, so that doesnt count toward this conversation about Game 7 showdowns. To get in the same general neighborhood, lets look at the 2002 World Series. That one went to seven games, between the Angels and Giants. The Angels franchise began play in 1961 and had never won the World Series. Thats a 41-year drought. The Giants hadnt won since 1954, which was 48 years earlier.MORE: SN's Game Center: Scores, statsLong, frustrating droughts, sure. But 48 and 41 dont really hold a candle to 68 and 108.The As and Reds met in the 1972 World Series. The Athletics hadnt won a World Series since 1930, when they were the Philadelphia As remember, the franchise played in Kansas City from 1955-67 before moving to Oakland. So thats a 42-year drought. The Reds had just been to the Series two years earlier (they lost to the Orioles), but they hadnt won the title since 1940, a 32-year drought. Again, 32 and 42 dont compare to 68 and 108.SPECTOR: Cubs will have Schwarber for Game 7, and that's good for baseballWeve seen teams facing long droughts reach Game 7s, of course, but theyve always faced teams that had won a title in the previous 20 seasons. In Arodys Vizcaino Jersey 2013, the Rangers owned a 52-year drought (they started play in 1961 as the second Washington Senators and had never won it all) but were playing the Cardinals (title in 2011). In 1987, the Twins franchise owned a 63-year drought (they won as the first Washington Senators in 1924) but were playing the Cardinals (title in 1982). In 1986, back when the Red Soxs skid was only 68 years (theyd won with Babe Ruth in 1918) they were playing the Mets (title in 1969).And, of course, Clevelands drought was 49 years when they played in Game 7 of the 1997 World Series, but they were facing a Marlins team that was only in its fifth year of existence. After losing back-to-back potential clinching games this year, though, thats probably not the memory Cleveland fans want to dwell on at the moment.
